Why we created BAS

For years, urban art has existed in a strange contradiction. Millions of people photograph murals, share them online, and travel to neighborhoods famous for their graffiti and street art. Yet at the same time, urban artists are often dismissed, misunderstood, or pushed aside.

Barcelona is one of the most important cities in Europe for urban art culture. Areas like Poblenou, El Raval, and Gràcia have become open-air galleries where artists transform walls into conversations. But recently, the city has also become stricter with interventions in public spaces.

Policies like the Pla Endreça, focused on controlling and “cleaning” public space, have increased restrictions around graffiti and street art in Barcelona. While these policies aim to maintain order, they also raise an important question:

What happens when a city removes too much of its spontaneity?

At BAS, we believe urban art is part of the identity of Barcelona. It reflects emotions, social movements, ideas, humor, protest, and culture. It tells the story of the city in real time.

We wanted to build a place where people could experience urban art beyond stereotypes. A place where both newcomers and longtime fans could understand why this movement matters.
